PATHNET
Pathnet, a program by Cerner, was designed for the use of professionals in clinical laboratory and pathology to be able to document their findings of tests in a separate, more specific software system used primarily in the lab.
By the use of this software, pathologists are able to document their histological findings and diagnoses and offer a place to store images of patient's diagnostic slides and specimens for physicians to view. In addition, reports are issued and transcribed through Pathnet, allowing to cross-over to Cerner Millenium for the use of physicians and other clinical professionals' use. This allows for documentation of the patient's tissues and specimens, accessioning, or ordering, of specimens, transcription of pathologist's findings and diagnoses, and allows for official reporting of pathology cases.
The clinical laboratory uses Pathnet for the use of ordering specimens, documenting how many specimens and quantities received, and reporting of laboratory tests done on blood and body fluids. The laboratory is able to keep track of a patient's critical values and results, and the need for certain tests to be done. This software is used by departments in the laboratory such as hematology and coagulation, chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, urinalysis, and any specialized testing requested by physicians and medical staff.
Through Pathnet, Cerner provides "improved quality of patient care through verification of patient demographics, test results, and QC controls, and the ability to process large quantities of specimens safely" (Cerner, 2011).
